Think dalgona is only for coffee lovers? Think again!
This Dalgona Matcha Latte is the perfect fusion of trend and tradition, combining the viral whipped drink format with the smooth flavor of Japanese matcha. It's rich, creamy, and ideal for anyone looking to enjoy a café-style treat at home (with a cute aesthetic, too).
But, why Matcha?!
Matcha is a fine, high-quality green tea powder used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. It’s packed with antioxidants, rich in flavor, and offers a gentle energy boost without the crash. For this dalgona-style drink, matcha is whipped with cream and sugar to form a fluffy, mousse-like topping that pairs beautifully with milk.
The result? A stunning green-and-white drink that tastes as good as it looks. :)
Originally popularized on TikTok during the 2020 lockdown, the dalgona drink became a social media sensation for its beautiful layers and cloud-like texture. While the original version used instant coffee, sugar, and water to create a whipped foam, this matcha twist skips the caffeine buzz in favor of a more calming, earthy flavor; still just as satisfying.
🌱 Where does “dalgona” come from?
The term dalgona refers to a Korean street candy made by melting sugar with baking soda. It’s traditional, sweet, and recently made headlines again thanks to Squid Game. But the whipped drink version? That story starts a little differently.
In 2020, Korean actor Jung Il-woo tried a whipped coffee in Macau on TV and compared its taste to the traditional dalgona candy. That moment sparked a trend where people everywhere were whipping up creamy drinks at home.
And from there, the internet did its thing: matcha lovers decided to give the recipe a green tea makeover 💚
