FAQ
1. What makes mugicha a traditional Japanese tea? Roasted barley tea has been enjoyed in Japan for centuries and remains one of the most common everyday drinks in Japanese homes. Many families keep a chilled pitcher of mugicha in the refrigerator all summer long, and because it is naturally caffeine-free, it is enjoyed by everyone from children to grandparents.
2. How should I store this product? We recommend that you store your mugicha away from light and sealed firmly in a cool environment. Placing it in the refrigerator is best to maximize freshness.
3. What is your policy on "best by" dates? While it heavily depends, there will always be at least 3 months before the best by date. Upon opening, we do recommend that you consume all the contents within 1-2 months for the best quality.
4. The serving sizes are too small/large, what should I do? Japanese palates often 2 grams per serving so this is what we used as our guideline. However, a benefit of powdered tea is that this can be altered to the level of your choosing. If you prefer a stronger or lighter taste, feel free to adjust tea and water levels accordingly.
5. Is mugicha gluten-free? No. Mugicha is made from barley, which contains gluten, so it is not suitable for people with celiac disease or a gluten intolerance.
6. Can mugicha be enjoyed hot and cold? Yes. Mugicha is traditionally served ice cold in summer, but it is just as comforting hot in cooler months. Simply mix the powder with cold or hot water, or add it to milk for a toasty barley latte.
7. Why choose mugicha powder instead of tea bags? Traditional mugicha is made by steeping or simmering roasted barley and then throwing the grains away. Our powder is roasted barley ground so finely that it mixes into water or milk in seconds, so you enjoy the whole grain with nothing to steep, strain, or discard. This reflects mottainai, the Japanese principle of "do not waste."
